About the Houghton County Democratic Party
Welcome From The ChairWelcome to the online home of the Houghton County Democratic Party. Since 1962 we have been a part of the Copper Country of Michigan. During those years we have seen the Michigan College of Mining and Technology become Michigan Technological University, the closing of the last copper mines in the Upper Peninsula, and six decades of national events such as the Civil Rights Act, the Clean Air Act, and the institution - and then overturning - of Roe v. Wade. Through all these years, we have always tried to be on the right side of history and of human decency. We believe everyone should be confident of a life with enough food, water, shelter, safety, and opportunities to speak freely, labor honestly, and live a life they can be proud of. Achieving these goals takes organized work: with a diverse array of voices in American political and economic life, those who would remove obstacles to human thriving must work together. We believe that Americans benefit enormously from their communities and we have obligations in return. That is why we choose to unite under the banner of the Democratic Party which supports these ideals: health care for all, an environment that can sustain itself and us, and the strengthening of American democracy in the face of serious and growing threats. The challenges are real but so is our ability to stand up and make a difference. Every door knocked, every sign put up, every voter we talk to improves the odds in a contest that is all about individual steps adding up to a march. You can stand up for your principles and declare to your neighbors that it is possible to care for them, for their right to be safe from disease or gun violence or hunger, and every time you declare this you encourage others to declare the same. And if enough of us declare, then yes, we win. So we hope you will join us, donate, or even better, volunteer to take your courage out into our community and inspire others to do the same.
